Car seat check events offered across North Dakota

GRAND FORKS — Four out of five car seats are not used correctly, officials said, and are highlighting safety during National Child Passenger Safety Week. Carma Hanson at Safe Kids Grand Forks says the problem is most common with complex infant seats for newborns and young babies. She says other issues include moving to the next car seat stage too quickly, or not keeping children turned around in their seat long enough. She says Safe Kids Grand Forks aims to fix those issues, at seat-safety check events. "This is the time where we talk to parents and caregivers about the fact that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for kids, and if they've got those car seats properly installed, we can help to assure that those kids are going to be riding as safe as possible in motor vehicles," Hanson said.
